The Institut Mutualiste Montsouris (IMM) is a care-oriented, private, non-for-profit hospital. Located in Paris’s southern outskirts in the 14th district near Parc Montsouris, in an extremely dense and competitive hospital environment IMM performs primarily general and complex surgical operations, excelling in most areas, apart from neurosurgery and ENT.

Since 2010, IMM’s overall capacity has increased significantly due to the resumption of the Department of Cardiac Pathology (Foch Hospital with six additional beds), the enlargement of the Pediatrics and Maternity Department (five extra beds), and the creation of the Oncology Department (10 inpatient hospital beds and 10 day hospital beds).

IMM’s capacity has therefore increased to 465 beds, 34 intensive care and 24-hour monitored care beds, 38 inpatient hospitalization beds, 17 surgery rooms, and 12 hemodialysis stations. In 2014, the IMM guaranteed 35,000 inpatient treatments, 160,000 consultations and 15,000 surgeries.

Main departements’ description

Cardiac and Vascular Medico-Surgical Department

The division of Cardiac Medico-Surgical Pathology provides diagnosis and treatment for both acquired and congenital heart disease in adult and children’s over 30 kg. The division has a long tradition of managing advanced coronary artery disease with the use of off pump revascularization in appropriate candidates, as well as repair of complex heart disease. In addition all aspects of cardiac surgery are performed except heart transplantation including; the full range of aortic pathologies from ascending and descending aorta to acute aortic dissection; and also complex mitral valve repair. A special interest of the department is devoted to the development of minimal invasive techniques which include currently operation of video surgery and robotic surgery, using minimal incision for closures of heart defect as well as valve repair or replacement and aorta-coronary bypasses.

The cardiac surgery department is located on the 5th floor of The IMM Hospital with a capacity of 49 beds, the intensive cardiac unit has 12 beds with 24 hour coverage by an in house cardiologist with competence in angioplasty, and the post cardiac surgery unit has 10 beds.

In addition to surgery, a coronary artery catheterization laboratory is located on the first floor which allows the practice of angioplasty and catheterization and interventional cardiology.

Digestive Diseases Department

The digestive disease’s department includes the medical and surgical specialty.

Together, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, doctors performing endoscopies and surgeons will decide on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract.

Diseases of the digestive tract include:

  • Diseases of the gastrointestinal system: oesophagus – stomach – small intestine – large intestine – rectum – anus
  • Disorders of the liver and biliary tract disease: liver – pancreas – gallblader – and biliary tract.
  • Diseases of the abdominal layer: inguinal, crural and incisional hernias, rectal prolapses.
  • Diseases of other intra-abdominal glands such as spleen and adrenal glands.

GYNECOLOGICAL SURGERY UNIT AND MOTHERCHILD UNIT

With its technical support facilities, the Gynecological Surgery Unit provides patients with high-quality surgical solutions in a multidisciplinary environment and in close collaboration with corresponding physicians, whether they are gynecologists or generalists.

IMM gynecological surgeons’ use of the da Vinci Robot provides the optimal treatment of complex pathologies: pelvic organ prolapse, gynecologic cancers, myomectomies, and endometriosis. The viewing quality and accurate placement of its functional components enable unrivaled precision in dissection and suture.

The gynecological surgery team offers its patients the widest range of operating techniques and provides the latest technologies available. The activity is oriented toward reconstructive pelvic surgery and minimally invasive.

IMM gynecologists, surgeons, and physicians have extensive expertise in treating several pathologies and diseases, including:

Meanwhile, IMM’s Mother–Baby Unit specializes in culturally competent pregnancy care, as well as high-risk pregnancy care, and is recognized across France for its excellence in serving women with highly trained obstetricians, midwives, family medical doctors, and nurses. The unit offers top-of-the-line edge-assisted reproductive technology (ART) services, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and single-embryo transfer—all in highly individualized, private settings.

Obstetrical activity is made of 2000 deliveries per year on average (Maternity level I).

Ophthalmology unit

The activity is oriented toward the anterior segment (cataract surgery) with ambulatory treatment. The development of posterior segment is a current project (Retinal surgery).

ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY DEPARTMENT

The Orthopedic Surgery Department is an established leader in advanced orthopedic care. It offers comprehensive services for a full spectrum of musculoskeletal conditions and top expertise in four predominant kinds of surgery:

  • Complex spine surgery
  • Hip replacement surgery
  • Knee surgery
  • Foot and ankle surgery
  • The last evolution is the development of upper limb surgery with ambulatory activity. Each specific activity is managed by a senior hyper specialist surgeon.

Major particularities are related to the highly technological necessities of spinal surgery, total hip replacement, and combined procedures for spinal and thoracic cancer. The Orthopedic Surgery Department provides cutting-edge technologies (e.g., image transmission with medical imaging) and remains dedicated to both basic and clinical research as means to develop new prosthetic devices and support, as well as surgical techniques.

THORACIC SURGERY DEPARTMENT

The Thoracic Surgery Department is a full-service clinical and research unit providing a wide range of diagnostic services and the ongoing management of conditions affecting the lung, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, bronchiectasis, tuberculosis, and more unusual conditions.

It deals with:

  • the diagnosis and treatment of adult respiratory tract pathologies: lungs, bronchi, trachea, pleura, mediastinum, chest, diaphragm, and pulmonary arteries. Treatment of primary, or secondary malignant tumors of the lungs, bronchi and mediastinum.
  • Surgical treatment of thoracic and diaphragmatic pathologies: benign and malignant tumors, acquired and congenital chest wall deformities.
  • Medical respiratory pathologies: acute and chronic diseases of the respiratory tract.
  • Endoscopic surgery and new techniques in minimally invasive surgery, especially in the following areas: pulmonary, pleural and mediastinal diseases, hyperhidrosis (sympathectomies), and intrathoracic lesions of the oesophagus.
  • Bronoscopy fibroscopies and spirometry as well as endoscopic treatment of tracheo-bronchial diseases (prosthesis).
  • Diagnosis and treatment of thromboembolic venous diseases (phlebitis and pulmonary embolisms).
Other orientations

Endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands), Splenic surgery and surgery of some esophageal diseases, Ear, Nose and Throat consultations are available on daily base.

Physicians’ and surgeons’ efforts in the Thoracic Surgery Department are directed at improving treatment results by using minimally invasive techniques and combining surgery with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, gene therapy, and novel therapeutics. The department is led by four full-time thorasic-pulmonologist surgeons, who are supported by a team of junior doctors, specialist nurses, and a physiotherapist. Some of the specialized activities that the department provides include treatment of malignant tumors, both primary and secondary (i.e. metastatic), affecting the lungs, bronchi, and mediastinum. Treatment and post-operative follow-ups are conducted in a multidisciplinary approach, as well as in cooperation with the Oncology Department and several medical-oncology departments of the Ile-de-France area.

UROLOGY DEPARTMENT

IMM physicians and surgeons are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art medical and surgical care in all aspects of adult and pediatric urology. IMM’s Urology Department has proven expertise in prostate cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment. World-renowned pathologists and specialists can identify cancer cells at a much earlier stage of diagnosis to ensure the best outcomes, while surgeons and oncologists work together to develop the best course of treatment. IMM’s urologists have extensive expertise in surgical techniques, including:

Robotic radical prostatectomy has been performed in the department since 2001, during which time IMM pioneered the development of the technology. Using the laparoscopic approach developed at IMM since January 1998, the robotic approach combines laparoscopic and robotic advantages: 3-D vision, highly precise dissection, and a minimally invasive approach. More than 6,000 patients have been treated since this early period, and statistics support the efficiency of the robotic system and its outstanding results in terms of less blood-transfusion required, lesser post-operative pain, shorter hospitalization days, and on a functional level, less affected urinary system functioning and sexual activity.

The department is affiliated with the Paris-Descartes University.

The Urology team has the greatest world experience in the laparoscopic surgery for cancer. He was the second team after the Lyon’s team to use the focused ultrasounds (HIFU) to treat prostate cancer and actually developed a brachytherapy protocol.

European School of Surgery

The European School of Surgery, affiliated to the Paris-Descartes University, is devoted to train surgeon in laparoscopic surgery.
